Emma Didlake, at 108 years old, was given the James Weldon Johnson lifetime achievement award at Detroit NAACP's 58th Annual Freedom Fund Dinner Sunday evening at the Cobo Center in Detroit April 28, 2013. Didlake grew up in Kentucky, and in 1944, with her husband and 5 children, she moved to Detroit. Didlake joined the NAACP in 1945. She is a lifetime member of the NAACP, Golden Heritage and Diamond Member. Didlake was a cosmetologist by trade, but also a veteran of the U.S. army's Women's Army Corp. She has was an educator at Second Baptist Church and held many positions within the church, like editor of the Baptist Star Network. Didlake is the Detroit NAACP's branch 'Matriarch'
